Elections in Offing

Just one month is left for the election and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is facing stagnation. There is no manifesto, no election campaign, and no finalized of tickets distribution. However, when the leaders of the PMLN was contacted, they said, “Of course, there is a delay, but we are in the process of distributing tickets. We conducted interviews for the 2300candidates who had applied for the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies, and we took extra care in the selection of the other candidates. In view of the current political situation and their popularity in their constituency, they purely relied on merit.

PML N says that that their manifesto is in the final stages and it will be made public this week. More ticket distribution has been finalized, and the election will start with full swing. We have conducted a political, but we understand that the frequency is not as visible as it is for the other parties. But now, in the coming days, the PML-N leadership will be conducting meetings all over Pakistan, and they will be quite visible because they are taking so much time in finalizing the details and also waiting for the decision of the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, the Pakistan People’s Party is not only conducting corner meetings and distributing tickets, but also finalizing the manifesto, whereas other parties have also ahead of PMLN.

A resolution passed in the upper house of the Parliament, where they demanded a delay in the election. But later, all parties rejected that resolution, whereas PMLN openly opposed it in the Senate, and the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party remained silent. However, later, outside the Parliament, they opposed this resolution. But in a popular talk show on a private channel, the leaders of all political parties quite equivocally supported the Supreme Court for the elections to be held on time, on the 8th of February, and disregarded the resolution passed in the Senate for a delay in the general elections.

The most of those who were present at the time of passing the resolution were those senators who were completing their tenure in 2024. So they took a chance and passed this resolution, including the chairman, so that they can continue till the appointment of new Senators. There was a personal motive behind moving this resolution.

It is noteworthy that even those parties in KPK and Balochistan who wanted a delay in the elections have also stated that they would take part in the elections under any circumstances. They said they would not boycott the elections if these were held on the 8th of February. They desire the election to be delayed on the basis of ground realities in KPK and Balochistan where the law and order situation demands that the election should be postponed. However, if the security condition is improved and candidates can contact their voters, they fully support the holding of the election on the 8th of February.
